Located in the historic southwest corner of New Mexico's Hidalgo County, Animas is a little desert town that is surrounded by vast views of rugged scenic beauty. The landscape around Animas consists of rolling hills, deep rich canyon lands, and gently sloping desert hilly terrain areas and the great Continental Divide runs along this corridor of scenic mountains with moderate amounts of rainfall on the eastern side of the range flowing into the magnificant Playas Valley and on the westside flows into the ominus Animas Valley which in the Spring time is very green and populated with a multitude of wild flowers.
The San Simon Valley lies to the east of the Chiricahua Mountains where you'll find the little desert towns of Portal, Arizona and Rodeo, New Mexico and Animas, New Mexico. Anywhere in this valley, the views of the Peloncillo Mountains and the Chiricahua Mountains are simply magnificent. The area around Portal-Rodeo is currently experiencing a new lease on life, as the likes of John McAfee, from the anti-virus software era, has purchased large parcels of land and currently spends a lot a time in the area.
